Cher-Asile SDA Church History

In 1943 The Mundo Nobo SDA church was the only SDA congregation in Curacao. New churches were needed to accommodate members from the west and east side of the island.
In preparation to built a new church in 1944 the first crusade was conducted by Ps Gardiner with translator Jacinto Juliet. First Baptism, conducted by Ps Gardiner, was on June 24, 1944, it consisted of six souls, to mention, Alvina Jones, Thomas Kroon, Martha Ellis, Paulina Leito, Vilma and Daphne Labega. The second baptism, consists of eleven souls among others, Br. Winrick and his wife Ismay Wilson were baptized.
Ps.Gardiner and Ps.Ivan Berkel continued working in the Cher Asile community for 5 years.

In April 1948 when Ps.Roy Henneberg and his wife Eleonore came to Curaçao, Ps.Henneberg immediately secured the land and seek permit to built a church. In Dec 12, 1948 in Santa Clara, Cuba, the committee approved the plans to build the Cher-Asile SDA church.
Six months later in June 1949 the Cher-Asile SDA church began its construction. By November that year the church structure was up. The interior of the church had four Sabbath School rooms, a choir loft, a baptistry, and also a large balcony. The seating capacity was 300.

On May 25, 1951, the church was organized under the leadership of Ps. Roy R. Henneberg. The members were transferred in from Mundo Nobo SDA church, Newly baptized, from neighborhoods and students from the Caribbean. Ps.Hennenberg organized and directed the Cher-Asile SDA Church Choir, other leaders after the pastor were Winrick Wilson, Olivia Alexander, John Sweeney, Veronica Gittens, and Gloria De Windt. Some choir members were Francis Williams, Jan & Enid Hermina, Jerusha Ricardo, Carlos Smith, Veronica Hooker and Winrick Wilson. On June 2, 1951 on the eve of his departure Ps.Henneberg dedicated the church at Cher-Asile, just eight days after the church was organized.
